Kilimanjaro Day 5
This is Karanga Camp in the morning with Kili in the background.
This is the Karanga Valley I had to climb down yesterday and then climb up to get to the camp. You can see the two paths. The one on the right leads to a water supply where the porters get the water. Then they have to carry it up from the valley for this camp. There is no water source at the next camp, so they have to go down in the morning again to carry water to the next camp, Camp Barafu. Once they carry all the equipment and water to the next camp, some of them come back here and refill the water jugs and make a second trip to the next camp.
A closer look.
Looking back on the Karanga Campsite
Another view of Kili. We are slowly moving around to the back of the mountain.
Here I am. Getting closer.
My cook on the left and guide on the right.
The Path to Barafu. Up the ridge, turn left and climb some more.
Zoomed in. You can see the hikers.
Made it to Base Camp, Camp Barafu, 15,420 ft, 4000 to go, starting tonight. I arrived here around 1230 noon.
Me and the mountain. The glacier you see at the top is the one I have to go behind to get to the top. Up the ridge on the right and up towards the small bit of snow in the center of the picture. Then follow the ridge to the left in behind that glacier. You’ll see that glacier later.
This is the trail I’ll be heading up tonight. You can see the hikers coming down from their ascent attempt. The ones skipping down made it!
More of the trail.
This is the glacier near the top. I’ll actually be climbing behind that to the summit.
Here we have a couple of videos.
The wind is drowning out most of my commentary. As I said before, probably a good thing.
