Kilimanjaro Summit Day
I started my summit drive at 1200 midnight so not many pictures until the sun came up.
This is the sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Mawenzi Peak is one of the three volcanic cones that actually make up Kilimanjaro. It is at 16,893 ft. The other two are Shira, 13,140 ft. and the one I’m climbing, Kibo, with its peak named Uhuru at 19,341. You may remember the Shira Campsite and pictures of the Shira Plateau from end of day 2. Mawenzi cone is about 7.5 miles away from Kibo.
A closeup of the sun rise.
One of the glaciers. This is the one you could see from Barafu camp, that I said I would be climbing in behind it. Very close to the top. Facing south. You can see a weather tower on top of the glacier to the left.

Facing the west from the top of Kili. The mountain is so huge/wide that there isn’t the dramatic effect of seeing down 19,000 ft. The crater is around 500 – 600 ft deep. The crater is 2.5 kilometers wide at the ridge.
Panning around to the north west. The crater is huge.
Almost straight north now.
North east. You can see Mawenzi Peak
East now with Mawenzi centred. We came up from behind the ridge where you see the trail, and worked our way around the crater ridge to the right.
A goofy bird at 19,300 ft.

AT THE TOP!!!! A dream come true. I wanted to make a video, but at this point it was just so overwhelming and surreal. Not to mention everything was an effort and your thought process is like in slow motion.

Receiving the certificate. Yippeeeeee!

This is a test comment from Bob. I liked the pictures.
It was a very hard climb, but so worth it. It was absolutely amazing!!!
Congratulations Bob in achieving this climb 🏔! Way to go! Should be very proud!! 👏
I am speechless as I try to grasp the distance, the climbing up and down to gain a few hundred feet on
not the easiest looking trails. It’s only when you see the “little” dots of people that you somewhat get a
perspective of “distance”. Great pictures.
Amazing sir! What an experience! Too physical for me… I like me flat terrain 🙂 Congratulations on achieving your dream… Not many people can say they’ve had the opportunity to not only make a dream come true, but have bragging rights of having stood on a continents highest point!
Thank you for sharing. Love the commentary!
So where will your next adventure take you?
This is awesome Bob, Congratulations! I have some experience with altitude sickness and can empathize with your experience up there. Hey my facebook account is down. But my eMail, phone, linkedin and twitter is the same. Let’s get together over christmas. -cheers
Awesome adventure and achievement, Bob. Congratulations!!!! Great pictures and commentary. Flatiron was just a warm-up for this one, wasn’t it. Thank you for sharing your adventure and success. Marg
All I can say is WOW! What an amazing adventure for sure. Following along on your adventure actually gave me a sense I was climbing with you. Except, I bet my legs are no where near as sore and tired as yours were. Thanks for sharing your adventure with me Bob. I now have a new bucket list item.
Bob
Amazing trip! Congrats!
A lot more difficult than my bucket list mountain Machu picchu.
Your videos and pictures really gave one a feeling that they were there, without having to deal with the
altitude. Your cardiovascular system was handling it well.
Congrats again.
